Why shingles are heavier than they look

A standard 10x10 square of asphalt shingles typically runs 200-400 pounds depending on the number of layers being removed and whether they're wet. A full roof tear-off on an average single-family home can easily run several tons. That's why we often recommend a smaller, dedicated container for a roof-only job rather than folding it into a general remodel load.

Storm-damage roofing jobs

A real share of our roofing calls follow wind damage from a hurricane-season system or a strong summer thunderstorm. If the tear-off is storm-damage related, tell us when you call - we can prioritize scheduling and make sure the container size accounts for the fact that storm-exposed shingles are often wetter and heavier than a routine tear-off.

Sizing it right

A 15 or 20 yard covers most single-family roof tear-offs. Larger homes, multiple layers of old shingles, or a tear-off combined with other remodel debris can push that to a 30. We'd rather ask a few questions up front - roof size, number of layers, any other debris going in - than have the container come up short.

Placement for a roofing job

Roofers usually want the container as close to the house as possible to minimize the carry distance for tear-off crews. Tell us where the roofer wants it staged and we'll place it there directly, with protective boards under the rails regardless of the surface.

Keeping the load compliant

Shingles have to sit level with the top rail so the load can be tarped and legally transported - an overloaded, heaped container can't be picked up until it's leveled. If a job is running heavier than expected, call for a swap rather than trying to pile more on top.
